Ruditapes

Description

Ruditapes, specifically the species Ruditapes philippinarum (also known as the Manila clam), belongs to the Veneridae family within the order Veneroida. While this bivalve is a major commodity in global aquaculture, in certain non-native environments, it is classified as an invasive species that disrupts local ecological balances and competes with indigenous benthic organisms.

This mollusk does not affect terrestrial plants, but it poses significant challenges in aquatic environments. It functions as a pest when it outcompetes native species for phytoplankton and space in managed nursery beds. Its presence can alter the geochemical composition of sediment, creating unfavorable conditions for other aquatic crops.

The biology of Ruditapes is characterized by a biphasic life cycle, involving a planktonic larval stage followed by a sedentary benthic stage. The larvae are dispersed by water currents, allowing them to colonize vast areas quickly. Once they reach the juvenile stage, they burrow into the substrate and begin their active filtration feeding, which is the primary driver of their environmental impact.

The harm caused by Ruditapes is mainly ecological and economic. By consuming vast amounts of suspended organic matter, they can starve out other farmed species. Furthermore, their high density can cause anoxic conditions in the substrate, leading to localized die-offs of other bottom-dwelling organisms and reducing the overall productivity of the aquaculture site.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • Continuous monitoring of population density in aquaculture zones.
  • Mechanical removal of invasive clusters from sensitive ecological areas.
  • Implementation of physical barriers to prevent the colonization of nurseries.
  • Strict regulation of stock movement to prevent the introduction of the species into new ecosystems.
