Japanese carpet shell

The Japanese carpet shell (Ruditapes philippinarum) is a bivalve mollusk from the order Venerida and family Veneridae. While recognized as an aquaculture product, in specialized aquatic plant farming and hydroponic systems, it behaves as an invasive pest that interferes with the healthy development of cultivated vegetation.

This organism primarily affects coastal and submerged plant crops. By utilizing its efficient filtration system, the mollusk extracts essential nutrients from the water, starving the plants. Furthermore, its burrowing behavior leads to severe physical damage to the root systems, often uprooting young plants and causing widespread mortality in artificial planting zones.

The biology of the species is defined by its resilience and rapid reproduction. The life cycle involves planktonic larvae that drift until they find a suitable substrate to settle on. Once they metamorphose, they burrow deep into the sediment, where they become extremely difficult to eradicate, rapidly increasing in density within a single growing season.

The damage caused by these mollusks is multifaceted: they compete for space and nutrients, disturb the oxygenation of the root zone, and introduce excess waste into the water, which leads to pathogen development. Crops infested by Ruditapes philippinarum typically show stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and significant reduction in biomass yield.

Effective control requires a multi-layered approach to ensure the safety of the harvest. Management strategies include the installation of high-precision water filtration systems to block larval entry and the regular manual removal of mature shells from the growing substrate. Maintaining strict control over water salinity and substrate texture can also discourage colonization, while periodic dredging of the sediment helps eliminate established colonies before they reach critical population levels.
