Systematic position: Rumina decollata, commonly known as the de-collated snail, is a species of land snail in the family Achatinidae, order Stylommatophora. The name "de-collated" refers to its characteristic shell, which loses its early whorls during the maturation process, resulting in a blunt, flat tip.

Crops and economic importance: This snail is a known pest in gardens, nurseries, and greenhouses. It feeds on a diverse range of plant materials, including vegetable seedlings, leafy greens, ornamental plants, and even fallen fruit. In some cases, it can significantly hinder the growth of young crops, leading to economic losses in agricultural and horticultural settings.

Biology and life cycle: Rumina decollata is primarily nocturnal. It spends the daylight hours buried in moist soil or sheltered under debris to avoid desiccation. The life cycle involves laying small, spherical eggs in the soil. They are highly adaptable to various environmental conditions but thrive best in humid climates where plant cover is abundant.

Nature of damage: Damage caused by this snail includes irregular holes in foliage, consumed sprouts, and destruction of seedlings at the soil surface. They leave distinct slime trails on the ground and plant surfaces. By causing severe defoliation, they make plants susceptible to secondary infections and can completely destroy small seedlings in a short period.

Protection measures: Managing de-collated snail populations requires an integrated pest management approach:

• Sanitation: removing piles of debris, leaves, and weeds to eliminate daytime hiding spots.
• Physical barriers: placing copper strips around raised beds or using crushed stone barriers.
• Chemical control: using specialized molluscicides, such as iron phosphate baits, which are safer for non-target wildlife.
• Manual removal: hand-picking during damp evenings or using beer-filled traps buried at soil level.
