Systematic position: Subulina (specifically Subulina octona) belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, family Subulinidae. These are small, land-dwelling pulmonate snails that are common in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, often invading greenhouse environments and nurseries where they can become difficult to eradicate.

Host plants and damage: This pest primarily targets ornamental potted plants, nursery seedlings, and various greenhouse crops. The snails feed on delicate foliage, young shoots, and soft stems. Infested plants show irregular holes and slimy trails, and in cases of high population density, these snails can completely destroy young seedlings or significantly stunt the growth of larger specimens.

Biology and life cycle: Subulina octona is a hermaphroditic species with a high reproductive rate. They prefer damp, dark environments and are typically found within the soil media or near drainage holes of containers. Eggs are laid in clusters directly into the soil. Under favorable conditions of high humidity and warm temperatures, the cycle from egg to mature snail is rapid, allowing populations to explode in a short time.

Conditions of spread: The spread of this pest is largely anthropogenic, often facilitated by moving infested plants, contaminated soil, or nursery pots between different locations. Because they are primarily nocturnal and highly moisture-dependent, they thrive in greenhouses that practice frequent overhead irrigation, which provides the constant dampness required for their survival and mobility.

Control measures: Managing Subulina requires a combination of cultural practices and targeted chemical interventions. Recommended strategies include:

• Maintaining dry conditions on the soil surface to discourage snail activity.
• Regularly inspecting the undersides of pots and bench surfaces where snails harbor.
• Using bait traps containing iron phosphate, which is safer for the environment than traditional molluscicides.
• Implementing strict quarantine measures for all incoming plant material to prevent the introduction of eggs.
