Subulina octona

Subulina octona is a species of small, air-breathing land snail belonging to the order Stylommatophora and the family Subulinidae. Originally native to tropical regions, this mollusk has become a widespread pest in global greenhouse and nursery industries, often hitchhiking on imported ornamental plants and potting media.

The snail is easily recognized by its elongated, turret-shaped shell, which typically measures between 15 and 20 mm in length and displays a translucent, light amber color. Unlike larger garden snails, it spends most of its life cycle buried within the soil substrate or hiding under pots, making it a subtle but persistent threat to horticultural crops.

This species primarily feeds on decomposing organic matter, but in greenhouse environments, it often transitions to consuming the roots and tender foliage of living plants. High population densities can lead to significant damage to seedling roots, preventing proper plant development and creating entry points for fungal pathogens, which further jeopardizes the health of the host plants.

The biology of Subulina octona is characterized by a rapid reproductive rate and hermaphroditic reproduction, allowing a single individual to establish a colony quickly. In the controlled, warm, and humid environment of a greenhouse, the life cycle remains uninterrupted, with eggs being deposited directly into the soil, which complicates traditional monitoring and physical removal methods.

Control strategies for this pest should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key measures include maintaining rigorous phytosanitary standards when introducing new plants into a facility, heat-treating or sterilizing soil mixes, and applying specialized molluscicides when necessary. Additionally, adjusting irrigation systems to avoid excessive soil moisture can significantly inhibit the population growth of this mollusk.
