Taxonomic position: The Ailanthus silkmoth (Latin: Samia cynthia) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Saturniidae. Originally introduced to various regions for silk production, this large moth is now recognized as a potential defoliator of ornamental trees and shrubs in various parts of the world.

Host plants and damage: The primary host plant is the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). However, the caterpillars are polyphagous and can infest various other plants, including lilac, privet, cherry, castor bean, and several oak species.
