Description

Systematic position: The bulb mite (Sancassania coprophila) belongs to the order Sarcoptiformes and the family Acaridae. It is a cosmopolitan soil-dwelling mite often found in environments rich in decomposing organic matter, making it a significant pest in greenhouses and mushroom production facilities.

Affected crops: This mite is a polyphagous pest that attacks a wide variety of plants, including greenhouse vegetables, floral crops like lilies, tulips, and narcissi, as well as potatoes. It is particularly notorious for damaging mushroom mycelium, causing substantial losses in commercial cultivation.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph (hypopus stage), and adult. The hypopus stage is a specialized, non-feeding, resistant form that allows the mite to survive extreme conditions and disperse by attaching to insects or tools. Under favorable warm and humid conditions, the entire life cycle can be completed in approximately one week.

Nature of damage and harm: The pest primarily feeds on the roots, bulbs, and subterranean stems of plants. By tunneling into the plant tissue, it causes root rot, prevents nutrient uptake, and opens infection courts for pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Symptoms include stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and plant wilting, often leading to total collapse.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential. Cultural practices include proper soil sanitation, steam sterilization of potting mixes, and ensuring good drainage to avoid overly moist conditions. Using certified healthy bulbs and avoiding fresh manure in growing substrates are critical steps. When chemical control is necessary, application of specific acaricides should be performed in accordance with local regulations.
