Description
The Roundheaded appletree borer (lat. Saperda candida) is a wood-boring beetle from the family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera. This pest is a significant threat to deciduous fruit trees, specifically known for its ability to devastate apple orchards by attacking the wood beneath the bark.
This species primarily targets plants within the Rosaceae family. The most susceptible hosts include apple trees, pears, and quince, but it also infests hawthorn, mountain ash, and serviceberry. The damage is cumulative, as the larvae feed inside the trunk for several years.
The life cycle of this beetle typically spans two to three years. Adult females deposit eggs into small slits cut into the bark at the base of the trunk. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries that disrupt the tree's nutrient transport system.
Signs of an infestation include the presence of sawdust-like frass at the base of the tree and visible exit holes. Severely infested trees show signs of decline, such as yellowing leaves, sparse canopy, and branch dieback. In many cases, weakened trees eventually break or snap during high wind events.
Integrated pest management is critical for control. Strategies include periodic trunk inspections to detect early signs of egg-laying or larval entry. Protective barriers, such as wire mesh or specialized tree wraps, can prevent egg deposition, while localized insecticide treatments during the adult emergence period help reduce population pressure.
