Hickory borer

The Hickory borer (Saperda discoidea) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This insect is primarily known as a significant pest of hardwood trees, particularly those in the genus Carya, causing internal damage that is often difficult to detect until the tree shows severe symptoms.

The host range includes hickory, pecan, and walnut trees. While adult beetles feed on leaf tissues and small twigs, the larvae are the most destructive stage. They tunnel deep into the sapwood and heartwood, essentially girdling the tree or its branches from the inside out and causing structural decay.

The biological cycle of this species typically spans one to two years. Eggs are deposited into bark crevices by females. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the cambium layer, eventually moving into the xylem. These galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water, which is the primary cause of tree death or branch dieback.

The damage is characterized by thinning foliage, yellowing of leaves, and the presence of frass (sawdust-like material) ejected from exit holes in the bark. Trees that are already under stress from drought or secondary infections are particularly susceptible to heavy infestations, which can lead to total tree failure.

• Sanitary pruning of infested branches and stems.
• Promoting tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
• Removal and destruction of dead or dying trees.
• Application of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult emergence period.

Effective management focuses on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Regular inspection of wood-boring sites and immediate disposal of infested materials are crucial to break the life cycle. By reducing the number of suitable breeding sites, foresters and orchard managers can prevent localized outbreaks from turning into devastating infestations.
