Description
Saperda fayi is a species of longhorn beetle (family Cerambycidae, order Coleoptera). Known as a stem-boring insect, it is primarily recognized for its ability to induce the formation of galls on the branches of its host plants, which distinguishes it from many other wood-boring pests.
The primary hosts for Saperda fayi include various species of hawthorn (Crataegus). While it generally prefers wild shrubs, it can occasionally impact orchard trees, particularly in suburban areas where ornamental and wild-growing host plants are found in close proximity.
The life cycle begins when adult beetles emerge in late spring or early summer to mate. Females lay eggs near the buds or on small branches. As the larvae hatch and begin to feed beneath the bark, their activity stimulates the plant to form a distinctive, spherical gall, which provides both food and shelter for the developing larva.
The damage caused by this beetle is twofold: it disrupts the nutrient flow through the branch by creating the gall, and the structural integrity of the wood is compromised. This often results in branch breakage, dieback of the twigs, and an overall reduction in the plant's aesthetic value and physiological health.
