Poplar longhorn beetle

Systematic position. The Poplar longhorn beetle (Saperda perforata) is a species of longhorn beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This insect is primarily associated with trees within the Salicaceae family, specifically those in the Populus and Salix genera.

Host plants and damage. The beetle is a notorious wood-boring pest affecting poplars and willows. Larvae bore galleries in the cambium and the sapwood, causing significant physiological stress to the tree. This damage interrupts the flow of nutrients and water, often resulting in crown dieback, bark splitting, and overall decline in tree health.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Saperda perforata typically spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adult beetles emerge in the summer months and feed on the foliage and young bark of their host trees. Females deposit eggs in slits carved into the bark, and upon hatching, the larvae burrow deeper into the wood to feed and undergo their developmental stages.

Economic impact. This beetle is considered a significant threat to forest nurseries and landscape plantings. By weakening the structural integrity of the trees, larvae increase susceptibility to secondary infections by pathogens and other insect species. Infested trees often show poor growth rates, and severe infestations can eventually lead to tree mortality.

Pest management. Effective control requires a combination of silvicultural practices and integrated pest management strategies:

• Sanitary logging: Removal and destruction of infested wood to prevent the spread of the population.
• Monitoring: Using visual inspections for exit holes and frass to detect early signs of infestation.
• Promoting biodiversity: Encouraging natural predators like woodpeckers to help keep beetle populations in check.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management to increase resistance against attacks.
