Description
The Poplar borer (Saperda populnea) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Cerambycidae family. This insect is a significant pest in nurseries, plantations, and natural forests, primarily affecting young trees of the Salicaceae family across the Palearctic region.
The host range is mainly limited to various species of poplars and aspens. The larvae bore into the twigs, branches, and main stems of young plants. Their activity creates noticeable swelling or galls on the stem, which disrupts the vascular system and weakens the tree's structural integrity.
The life cycle of the poplar borer generally spans two years. Adults emerge in late spring or early summer to feed on young bark and leaves. After mating, females cut horseshoe-shaped incisions in the bark to lay their eggs. Larvae develop within the wood, excavating tunnels until they pupate.
Damage caused by this pest includes stunted growth, stem deformation, and increased susceptibility to wind breakage at the site of the galls. Severe infestations can kill young saplings or provide entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi, further degrading the health of the host tree.
