Description
The hazel longhorn beetle (Saperda similis) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is primarily recognized for its association with specific host trees, playing a significant role in the forest ecosystem and occasionally impacting horticultural plantings.
The primary host for this pest is the genus Corylus, including common hazel (Corylus avellana). In managed landscapes or orchards, the beetle can cause substantial damage to hazelnut trees, as the larvae target the woody tissue essential for the tree's structural integrity and nutrient transport.
The life cycle of Saperda similis typically spans two years. Females deposit eggs into the bark of trunks or branches. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood, creating extensive tunnels. This internal feeding remains hidden for long periods, often making the early stages of infestation difficult to detect by visual inspection alone.
Damage is characterized by the internal destruction of the vascular system. As the larvae tunnel, the flow of water and nutrients is severely restricted, leading to branch dieback, crown thinning, and, in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. Adult beetles also feed on leaves, although this damage is generally considered less destructive than that of the larvae.
