Small emperor moth

The small emperor moth (Latin: Saturnia pavonia) is a moth of the family Saturniidae. While often admired by collectors for its beauty, in agricultural settings, it is recognized as an occasional pest. Its larvae (caterpillars) feed on the foliage of various woody plants, which can cause significant thinning of the canopy if a large population is present.

This species is a polyphagous insect, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. It is commonly found attacking fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as berry bushes like raspberries and blackberries. In addition, they frequently inhabit wild forest trees such as willow, birch, alder, and heather, which can serve as reservoirs for infestation in orchards located near wooded areas.

The life cycle of the small emperor moth involves a single generation per year. The insect overwinters as a pupa inside a dense, pear-shaped silk cocoon, typically found near the base of the host plant or among leaf litter. Adults emerge in the spring, usually between April and May. Females lay eggs in clusters on the branches or trunks of suitable host plants, and hatching begins shortly thereafter.

The damage caused by the larvae is primarily defoliation. Young caterpillars exhibit gregarious behavior, feeding in groups and skeletonizing leaves, while older instars disperse to feed individually. Excessive feeding leads to a reduction in the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which can stunt the growth of young saplings and significantly reduce fruit yields in mature orchard trees.

Management strategies focus on a combination of monitoring and intervention. Mechanically removing and destroying cocoons during the dormant season is a highly effective preventative measure. If a significant infestation occurs during the growing season, appropriate insecticides or biological control agents (such as Bacillus thuringiensis) should be applied when the larvae are in their early stages of development.
