Description

The Giant peacock moth (Saturnia pyri) is a member of the Saturniidae family, order Lepidoptera. It is recognized as the largest moth species in Europe, with an impressive wingspan. While the adults are popular among collectors, the larvae are considered foliage-feeding pests that can impact the health of fruit-bearing trees.

This insect primarily infests fruit trees, showing a strong preference for members of the Rosaceae family, such as pear, apple, almond, apricot, and plum trees. It can also be found on walnut trees and various deciduous forest species. The presence of the pest is most notable in neglected or suburban gardens.

The species completes one generation per year. Winter is spent in the pupal stage within a robust, greyish-brown cocoon attached to the trunk or branches of the host tree. Adult moths emerge in spring to mate and oviposit. The resulting caterpillars feed throughout the summer months, growing significantly in size and requiring large amounts of foliage.

Damage is characterized by extensive defoliation of the canopy. As larvae mature, their appetite increases, potentially leaving trees leafless. This loss of photosynthetic capacity weakens the host plant, stunts growth, and reduces fruit production. Severe infestations can make young trees susceptible to secondary pathogens and winter stress.
