Description

The Spin moth (Saturnia spini) is a species of moth in the family Saturniidae. It is a large, visually striking insect that is often protected in its natural habitats. While it is not typically considered a major agricultural pest due to its low population numbers, its larvae are known to feed on various fruit-bearing trees and shrubs.

The host plants for the larvae include common orchard species such as plum, sloe, apple, pear, and hawthorn. When occurring in significant numbers, the caterpillars feed voraciously on the foliage, potentially leading to defoliation of specific branches or younger saplings in home gardens.

The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. The moths emerge in spring to mate and lay eggs. The larvae emerge and feed during the early and mid-summer months. By late summer, they spin large, dense, dark-colored cocoons, which are attached firmly to the branches of the host plant to overwinter until the following spring.

Damage caused by this insect involves the removal of leaf tissue. The caterpillars are heavy feeders; as they mature, they consume large sections of leaves, which can weaken the vigor of the tree. However, due to its rarity, extensive economic damage to large-scale commercial plantations is virtually unheard of.

Control measures should be non-invasive and selective. Since the cocoons are large and persist on the trees throughout the winter, manual removal is the most effective and eco-friendly method. Chemical intervention is rarely necessary and should be avoided to protect this sensitive species, favoring instead the preservation of the local ecosystem balance.
