Systematic position. The genus Schizura belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Notodontidae. These insects are well-known in entomology for their remarkable camouflage capabilities. The caterpillars often exhibit complex shapes and coloration, allowing them to resemble broken twigs or damaged foliage, which serves as a primary defense mechanism against predators.

Host plants. These pests are primarily associated with a variety of deciduous trees and shrubs. Their common hosts include apple, pear, birch, willow, maple, and oak trees. In agricultural settings, they can be particularly problematic for fruit orchards, while in forestry, they may affect the overall vitality of young saplings and ornamental trees.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult moths typically emerge in late spring or summer and are nocturnal. Females deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves. The larvae grow through several instars, frequently changing their appearance to avoid detection, before descending to the soil or leaf litter to pupate and overwinter.

Damage and economic impact. The larval stage is responsible for all feeding damage. Caterpillars graze on the leaves, either consuming margins or causing extensive skeletonization. Severe infestations result in significant defoliation, which stresses the tree, reduces its ability to produce nutrients via photosynthesis, and can weaken the plant's resistance to environmental stressors and secondary diseases.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Schizura populations. Effective strategies include:

• Monitoring adult moth flight using pheromone or light traps.
• Manual removal of larval clusters on small trees.
• Preserving natural predators such as parasitic wasps and predatory birds.
