Schizura ipomoeae, commonly referred to as the morning glory prominent, belongs to the Notodontidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth species is primarily recognized for its larval stage, which acts as a defoliator on various broad-leaved trees across its native range in North America.
The host range for this pest is diverse, including deciduous trees such as oak (Quercus), maple (Acer), elm (Ulmus), and birch (Betula). In some cases, it also targets orchard trees, potentially impacting the health and aesthetic quality of plants in nurseries and landscape settings.
The life cycle begins when overwintering pupae in the soil emerge as adults in the spring. Females lay their eggs on the underside of leaves. Larvae, known for their elaborate and irregular body shapes that provide excellent camouflage, emerge to feed extensively during the summer months before pupating in the ground once again.
Damage caused by this insect involves significant leaf tissue removal. Young larvae cause minor skeletonization, but mature larvae are capable of consuming entire leaves, leaving only the midribs and main veins intact.
