Description
Systematic position. Mites of the genus Schwiebea belong to the family Acaridae, order Sarcoptiformes. These are microscopic organisms often referred to as bulb or root mites, commonly found in soil and organic matter, thriving in greenhouse environments or commercial storage facilities.
Affected crops. The pest has a wide host range, primarily targeting bulbous crops like lilies, tulips, and hyacinths. It also affects root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, as well as greenhouse-grown vegetables like cucumbers and tomatoes, where it specifically attacks the rhizosphere and root collars.
Biology and life cycle. The development cycle includes eggs, larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs, and adults. A notable stage is the hypopus, a resistant form that allows the mite to survive extreme conditions or migrate via other insects or soil movement. They primarily feed on decaying organic matter but readily switch to healthy plant tissues when populations are dense.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. The feeding activity of Schwiebea leads to the destruction of root hairs and plant tissues. This weakens the plant, resulting in stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and wilting. Furthermore, their presence often initiates secondary rotting caused by soil-borne bacteria and fungi, which quickly destroys the root system.
