Description

Systematic position: This pest belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to rice production, particularly in humid agricultural regions where rice cultivation is concentrated.

Host plants and damage type: The primary host is rice. The insects use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap from stems and leaves. Heavy infestation causes the phenomenon known as "dead heart," where the central leaf of the rice seedling withers and dies, leading to poor tillering and reduced grain fill.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of the rice black bug is closely synchronized with rice planting cycles. Eggs are typically laid in batches on the underside of leaves. The insect undergoes incomplete metamorphosis, passing through several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. Its development is highly sensitive to humidity and water management in the paddies.
