Description
Systematic position. Scutellera perplexa belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Scutelleridae. This species is a specialized phytophage that has evolved to feed on the sap of specific plant species, which dictates its restricted geographical distribution and narrow host plant range.
Affected crops. This shield bug is a highly specialized pest that primarily infests species within the Euphorbiaceae family. In agricultural landscapes and surrounding habitats, it can cause damage to wild and ornamental forms of these plants, and potentially to adjacent crops if there is a shift in feeding behavior or a lack of primary hosts.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Scutellera perplexa follows a hemimetabolous pattern: egg, nymph (five instars), and adult. Adults overwinter in leaf litter or plant debris. During spring, when temperatures stabilize, the insects migrate to their host plants to mate and lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves.
Damage and harmfulness. Both nymphs and adults pierce plant tissues with their piercing-sucking mouthparts. As a result of sap extraction, chlorotic spots appear at the feeding sites, which eventually turn necrotic. Mass infestation leads to premature leaf drop, shoot deformation, and significant stunting of the plant's vegetative growth.
Control measures. Management of this pest relies on monitoring population density and removing host weeds from the Euphorbiaceae family that act as reservoirs. In cases of high infestation, the use of systemic insecticides is recommended. Furthermore, cultural practices such as deep autumn plowing and cleaning field margins of plant residues are effective in disrupting the overwintering sites of the adults.
