The genus Selatosomus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae, commonly known as click beetles. In an agricultural context, these insects are infamous for their larvae, widely known as wireworms, which are recognized by their tough, segmented, cylindrical bodies and their ability to cause significant economic damage to crops.

These pests have a very broad host range. They damage cereals such as wheat, barley, and maize, as well as root crops like potatoes, sugar beets, and carrots. The larvae reside in the soil profile, where they feed on seeds, young roots, and subterranean stems, often causing patchy stands in commercial fields.
