Systematic position. Selatosomus puncticollis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Elateridae, commonly known as click beetles. The larvae of this species, referred to as wireworms, are notorious agricultural pests worldwide. They are highly adaptable to various soil types and remain a constant threat to commercial crop production across temperate regions.

Host crops. The pest is a polyphagous insect with a wide range of host plants. The larvae primarily attack cereals, potatoes, corn, sugar beets, sunflower, and numerous vegetable crops. They pose the greatest danger during the early growth stages of the plants, as they feed on seeds, seedlings, and the underground parts of the stem, often resulting in significant yield losses.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Selatosomus puncticollis is relatively long, often spanning several years to complete. The development begins with eggs laid in moist, organic-rich soils. Larvae spend almost their entire life cycle underground, feeding on plant roots and decaying organic matter. Pupation occurs in the soil, and adults typically emerge in the spring to feed on foliage and reproduce.

Nature of damage and economic importance. Wireworms cause substantial damage by chewing through seeds and tunneling into the roots or stems of young plants. This feeding activity leads to reduced plant density, stunted growth, and death of seedlings. In severe infestations, farmers may witness complete patches of crop failure, which necessitates costly replanting and management interventions to secure the harvest.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling wireworm populations. Cultural practices such as intensive soil cultivation, crop rotation with non-host plants, and proper weed control are fundamental to reducing pest density. Chemical control is often necessary and involves the use of seed treatment with insecticides or the application of granular formulations in the soil during the planting process to provide protective barriers for the emerging crops.
