This species is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that targets various coniferous tree species, posing a serious threat to both natural forests and managed ornamental landscapes.

Host Plants: The pest primarily affects members of the Cupressaceae family. Key host plants include various species of Juniperus, Cupressus, Thuja, and Cedrus. It is particularly destructive in nurseries, parklands, and forest areas where stressed trees are present, as the insect tends to prefer trees with compromised health.

Biology and Lifecycle: The lifecycle of Semanotus laurasi is intrinsically linked to the wood of its host. Adult beetles emerge during the spring and summer months to mate and deposit eggs within bark crevices or wounded areas on the trunk. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the subcortical tissue, feeding on the phloem and cambium layers, which disrupts the tree's nutrient transport system.

Damage Patterns and Economic Impact: Larval feeding is the primary cause of damage. As larvae create extensive galleries, they fill them with frass (wood dust), causing girdling that leads to rapid tree decline. Visible symptoms include needles turning yellow or brown, premature needle drop, and crown dieback. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage leads to the death of the host tree.

Control Measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Preventive measures include the removal and destruction of infested trees to eliminate breeding sites. During the peak flight season, chemical applications may be used in nurseries.
