Cedar bark borer

Systematic position: The cedar bark borer (Semanotus ligneus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorned beetles). It is a specialized pest of coniferous trees that typically functions as a decomposer in forest ecosystems but can become an aggressive pest in weakened or stressed plant stands.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this species include various coniferous trees, particularly those from the genera Thuja (arborvitae), Chamaecyparis (false cypress), and Juniperus (juniper). It is frequently found in both native forests and managed landscapes, where it can cause severe damage to ornamental and exotic specimens.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the cedar bark borer typically spans 1 to 2 years, influenced by local climate conditions and the physiological state of the host tree. Adults are active during the spring and summer months. Females oviposit in bark crevices or under foliage scales, and the emerging larvae bore into the bark, constructing winding galleries that extend into the sapwood.

Damage and economic impact: Larvae are classified as stem borers. By feeding on the cambium and phloem layers, they disrupt the tree's nutrient transport system. This damage often manifests as the flagging or dying of individual branches, and in cases of heavy infestation, it leads to the eventual decline and death of the entire tree. Common signs include entry holes, frass accumulation, and premature yellowing of the needles.

Control measures: Due to the cryptic nature of the larvae living beneath the bark, control is challenging. Integrated management strategies include:

• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
• Sanitation by removing and destroying infested trees before adult emergence.
• Preventive systemic insecticide applications during peak adult flight periods.
• Regular phytosanitary monitoring of vulnerable conifer species.
