Description
Systematic position: Semanotus litigiosus is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles or wood-borers. This species is recognized for its specialized ecological niche, focusing its life cycle on the wood and inner bark of various coniferous tree species.
Host plants: The beetle primarily attacks weakened or recently felled conifers. Its host range includes significant forest species such as spruce (Picea), fir (Abies), and pine (Pinus). It is typically found in mature forest stands, arboretums, and managed timber plantations where stressed trees are present.
Biology and life cycle: The development period of Semanotus litigiosus generally spans one to two years depending on environmental temperatures. Adults emerge during the spring and early summer. After mating, females deposit eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the phloem and cambium layer to begin their feeding cycle.
