Systematic position: Semanotus sinoauster belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorned beetles or wood-borers. This species is a highly specialized xylophagous insect capable of causing significant economic damage to conifer forests and nurseries by feeding on internal tree tissues.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest are members of the Cupressaceae family. It is particularly destructive to trees within the Cryptomeria, Cupressus, and Juniperus genera. The infestation is frequently observed in monoculture plantations and ornamental landscapes where environmental conditions are favorable for the pest to thrive.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Semanotus sinoauster involves egg-laying within bark crevices. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the cambium and phloem layers. The larval stage is the primary growth phase, characterized by extensive internal tunneling. After completing development, the insect pupates within the wood before the adult beetle emerges to repeat the cycle.

Damage and pest status: The damage is primarily caused by larval tunneling, which severs the vascular system, effectively girdling the tree. Common symptoms include dieback of the crown, premature needle loss, excessive resinosis (bleeding) on the trunk, and the presence of oval-shaped exit holes. Persistent infestations often lead to tree mortality and increased vulnerability to secondary infections.

Management strategies: Controlling this pest requires a strict silvicultural approach, emphasizing the prompt removal and destruction of infested timber to limit the spread of the population.
