Shevtchenkella baccharis is a species of eriophyid mite, belonging to the family Eriophyidae and the order Acariformes. These mites are specialized plant parasites, characterized by their vermiform (worm-like) bodies and two pairs of legs, which distinguish them from most other mite groups.
The primary host for this pest is the Baccharis genus. These mites are specialized feeders that inhabit the meristematic tissues, leaf buds, and young shoots of the plant, where they thrive by exploiting the nutrient-rich sap of the actively growing parts.
The biology of this mite revolves around its ability to rapidly multiply during the host's growing season. Adult mites overwinter in protected refugia, such as dormant buds or bark crevices. As soon as temperatures rise in the spring, they migrate to fresh tissues to begin feeding and initiate new generations.
The damage caused by Shevtchenkella baccharis is manifested through the induction of abnormal tissue growth, known as galls, leaf curling, and stunted development. By injecting salivary enzymes into the plant tissue during feeding, the mites alter the plant's growth hormones, leading to disfigurement and reduced metabolic efficiency.
