Description
Taxonomic position. The Cylindrical stag beetle (Sinodendron cylindricum) belongs to the family Lucanidae within the order Coleoptera. Unlike many other large stag beetles, this species is smaller and has a distinct cylindrical body shape, which allows it to bore deep into woody tissues.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets broad-leaved trees. Its preferred hosts include species like beech, oak, hornbeam, birch, and alder. In orchards, it is known to affect fruit trees such as apples and pears, particularly those that are already stressed, decaying, or have compromised bark due to mechanical damage or disease.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the Cylindrical stag beetle is lengthy, typically spanning several years from egg to adult. Adults bore deep into the host wood to lay eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae spend their entire development stage inside the wood, feeding on it and creating extensive gallery networks. This internal feeding makes them particularly difficult to detect in the early stages of infestation.
Damage and economic impact. The larval stage causes the most significant harm by tunneling through the heartwood and sapwood. This internal damage compromises the structural integrity of the tree, leads to the decay of woody tissue, and can significantly decrease the productivity of fruit-bearing trees. In forest ecosystems, heavy infestations contribute to the decline of weak trees, accelerating their mortality.
Management strategies. Effective control requires a focus on sanitation. Regularly removing decaying logs, stumps, and standing dead trees is essential to reduce breeding sites. In orchard settings, maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and fertilization is key to preventing infestation. When necessary, targeted application of insecticides during the adult emergence phase can reduce population density.
