Description

Systematic position. The woodwasp (genus Sirex) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Siricidae. Unlike many other wasps, these insects are specialized wood-boring pests. They possess a distinct biological mechanism that allows them to thrive inside the vascular tissue and heartwood of various host trees.

Affected crops. These pests primarily target coniferous tree species, including pine, spruce, fir, and larch. They are particularly attracted to stressed or damaged trees, but the invasive species, such as Sirex noctilio, are known to successfully colonize healthy, vigorous conifers, making them a significant threat to global forestry.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves a symbiotic relationship with fungi. When a female oviposits into the tree, she injects not only eggs but also fungal spores and a toxic mucus. The fungus helps to decompose the wood, making it digestible for the developing larvae. The larvae spend their entire developmental period inside the wood, creating extensive galleries.

Nature of damage. The larvae bore deep, circular tunnels into the wood, filling them with tightly packed frass. External symptoms include small, perfectly round emergence holes, wilting foliage, and resin droplets on the bark where the female attempted to oviposit. The primary damage is the structural degradation of the timber and reduced commercial value of the logs.

Control measures. Management is challenging due to the hidden nature of the larvae. Recommended practices include:

  • Implementing strict sanitation protocols (removal of infested timber).
  • Utilizing biological control agents, such as parasitic nematodes.
  • Applying pheromone traps for population monitoring.
  • Ensuring timely processing and heat treatment of logs for international trade compliance.
