Description

The Sirex woodwasp (Sirex nitobei) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Siricidae. This insect is a dangerous technical pest of timber that specializes in attacking coniferous tree species, playing a significant role in the degradation of forest stands and reducing wood quality.

The primary host crops susceptible to attacks by this species include various types of pines, spruces, and firs. The pest prefers stressed, weakened, or freshly felled trees, but when population densities are high, it can also infest apparently healthy trees, posing a serious threat to commercial forestry operations.

The biology of the pest is closely linked to symbiotic fungi, which the female introduces into the wood during oviposition. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae develop deep within the wood, boring galleries that compromise the structural integrity of the tree and lead to gradual crown dieback.

The damage is characterized by circular exit holes, typically 4–6 mm in diameter, on the bark surface. Inside the wood, the larvae create winding tunnels packed with frass (wood dust). The harmful impact involves both mechanical destruction of wood tissues and the transmission of fungal pathogens that disrupt the tree's vascular system.
