California horntail

Systematic position. The California horntail (Sirex californicus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Siricidae. It is a specialized wood-boring insect (xylophage) primarily distributed throughout the coniferous forests of western North America.

Host plants. The primary targets for this pest are various coniferous species, particularly those within the genus Pinus (pines) and Picea (spruces). While it typically infests weakened, stressed, or fallen timber, it can also attack apparently healthy trees when population densities reach outbreak levels, posing a significant threat to timber resources.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Sirex californicus is closely integrated with a symbiotic fungus, Amylostereum. During oviposition, the female injects fungal spores into the wood; the fungus then degrades the cellulose, facilitating larval feeding. Larvae undergo several developmental stages while tunneling deep into the wood before pupating near the surface.

Damage and harmfulness. The economic damage is caused by larvae that bore extensive galleries through the wood, disrupting nutrient transport and structural integrity. This leads to tree mortality and severely degrades the quality of wood for commercial use. The presence of the pest is often identified by emergence holes on the bark, which appear as clean-cut circles approximately 3–6 mm in diameter.

Control measures. Managing Sirex californicus relies on silvicultural practices and integrated pest management. Essential control measures include:

• Sanitation logging to remove and destroy infested or damaged trees before insect emergence.
• Monitoring population levels using baited traps to track activity.
• Encouraging the presence of natural biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps (e.g., Rhyssa persuasoria).
• Maintaining forest health through proper stand management and density control.
