Reticulated tortrix

The reticulated tortrix (Sparganothis reticulatana) is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. As an agricultural pest, it primarily affects various woody plants, including both ornamental trees and fruit-bearing crops. Identifying this insect early is critical, as its larvae feed in a protected environment within rolled or webbed leaves, making them difficult to target.

The host range of Sparganothis reticulatana includes a variety of pome and stone fruits, such as apple, pear, and cherry trees, as well as several species of berry shrubs. The pest is particularly attracted to succulent young tissues, making spring and early summer the most vulnerable periods for orchard crops. Severe infestations can significantly reduce plant vigor and fruit yield.

Regarding its biology, the insect typically overwinters as young larvae in silk-spun cocoons hidden under bark scales or within leaf debris. Once temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and young foliage. The life cycle is highly responsive to ambient temperatures, with pupation occurring inside webbed leaf nests that provide mechanical protection against environmental factors and predators.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by the skeletonization of leaves, tunneling into flower buds, and scarring of developing fruits.
