Description

Sphaericus (lat. Sphaericus) is a specialized group of pests belonging to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae (weevils). This genus includes insects that cause significant damage to agricultural crops during their life cycle, progressing through complete metamorphosis from egg to adult stage.

This pest primarily infests legume crops, including alfalfa, clover, and various pea varieties. Both adults and larvae feed on the vegetative and reproductive parts of the plants, which leads to stunted growth, reduced yields, and significant degradation of the harvested crop quality.

The biology of Sphaericus development is closely linked to temperature patterns and soil moisture levels. The life cycle involves overwintering of adults in the topsoil or under plant debris. In spring, when favorable temperatures arrive, the beetles emerge to the surface, begin intensive feeding, and start laying eggs on host plants.

The pattern of damage is characterized by beetles gnawing at the edges of leaf blades, creating what is known as "notched feeding". Meanwhile, the larvae penetrate the root system or stems, destroying the plant's vascular tissue, which facilitates the development of secondary infections and can ultimately lead to total crop failure.
