Spilocaria belongs to the Coccinellidae family, however, unlike the majority of beneficial entomophagous species, representatives of this genus are specialized phytophagous insects. Systematically, they are classified within the order Coleoptera. It is crucial to distinguish this genus from beneficial predatory ladybirds, as misidentification can lead to incorrect decisions in integrated pest management programs.

This pest primarily damages various plant species within the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae families. Depending on the region of distribution, Spilocaria can cause significant damage to both field crops and vegetable plantations in protected environments. Their trophic specialization on specific leaf tissues makes them a significant risk factor in agricultural production.

The biological development of Spilocaria follows a complete metamorphosis cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Both adults and larvae actively feed on plant tissues by scraping the epidermis and mesophyll of leaves. Insects typically overwinter as adults in plant debris or the soil layer. The rate of reproduction is directly dependent on temperature and humidity, which determines the number of generations per growing season.

The damage pattern manifests as skeletonization of the leaf blades. In the areas where larvae feed, light or brown spots form, which may eventually merge, leading to tissue necrosis and premature leaf drop. The pest reduces the intensity of photosynthesis, which directly affects crop formation and quality. High populations of this pest can lead to a complete loss of plant vegetative mass.

Protection measures include a combination of agrotechnical and chemical strategies. Crop rotation and deep autumn plowing, which destroys overwintering sites, play a vital role. When the economic threshold of damage is exceeded, systemic or contact-stomach insecticides permitted for specific crops should be applied. Regular field monitoring is also recommended for the early detection of infestation hotspots.
