Description
The eye-spotted bud moth (Spilonota ocellana) is a member of the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a significant pest that poses a constant threat to commercial orchards and private fruit gardens across temperate climates.
This insect affects a wide variety of fruit trees, including apples, pears, plums, cherries, and apricots. In some cases, it can also infest ornamental trees and shrubs such as hawthorn or mountain ash, making it a versatile pest that is difficult to eradicate completely from surrounding landscapes.
The life cycle consists of a single generation per year. The larvae overwinter in tiny, well-hidden cocoons located in tree bark crevices or twig forks. As temperatures rise in early spring, the larvae emerge and bore directly into the opening buds, feeding on the tender internal tissues, which causes immediate growth arrest.
The damage caused by the larvae is severe. By feeding on buds, they prevent the development of leaves and blossoms, drastically reducing fruit set. Later in the season, they roll leaves together using silk, creating protective shelters where they continue to feed, leading to leaf skeletonization and stunted tree development.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as removing infested plant debris and keeping the orchard clean, are the first line of defense. Chemical control is most effective when applied during the early spring as larvae migrate from their winter shelters to the swelling buds.
