Squamura maculata is a species of moth belonging to the Cossidae family, commonly known as carpenter moths or wood-boring moths. This insect is recognized as a significant pest in both forestry and horticulture. Its larvae are specialized wood-borers that can cause extensive internal damage to host plants, often remaining undetected until the infestation becomes severe.

The host range of this pest primarily includes various deciduous trees, with a strong preference for cultivated fruit trees. The larvae penetrate the bark and bore deep galleries into the xylem and phloem layers. This internal feeding activity systematically disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to weakened tree vigor, stunted growth, and potential dieback of infested limbs.

The biological cycle of this species is primarily focused on the larval stage, which resides within the wood. Adult moths emerge at night to mate and lay eggs in crevices or wounds on the bark. Upon hatching, the young larvae immediately tunnel into the host plant. They undergo several instars while consuming the internal tissues, ultimately pupating within the tunnels they have excavated.

The damage caused by Squamura maculata is primarily identified by the accumulation of frass—a mixture of wood shavings and fecal pellets—found at the base of the tree or on branches.
