Lobster moth

Systematic position: The lobster moth (Stauropus fagi) is a species of moth belonging to the family Notodontidae and the order Lepidoptera. It is recognized primarily for its highly unusual caterpillar stage, which exhibits defensive behaviors and a shape resembling a crustacean, hence its common name.

Crops damaged: The larvae of this moth feed on a wide variety of deciduous trees. While naturally occurring in forests on beech, oak, and birch trees, the lobster moth frequently attacks orchard trees, including apple, pear, cherry, and plum, where it can cause localized defoliation in commercial and home gardens.

Biology and life cycle: The moth typically has one or two generations per year depending on the climate. Overwintering occurs in the pupal stage, protected within a tough silk cocoon buried in leaf litter or soil. Adult moths emerge in late spring. Females lay eggs on the underside of host leaves, and the emerging larvae feed extensively until they are ready to pupate by late summer or autumn.

Damage and harmfulness: Caterpillars are voracious leaf-feeders. In their early instars, they skeletonize the leaves, while older larvae consume entire leaves, leaving only midribs and petioles. Extensive feeding can lead to severe canopy thinning, which stresses the host trees, stunts fruit development, and reduces the plant's overall vigor for subsequent growing seasons.

Control measures: Management practices focus on minimizing population density in susceptible areas. Key strategies include:

• Physical removal of caterpillars from small trees.
• Cleaning leaf litter to remove overwintering pupae.
• Application of authorized insecticides during the early larval stages when they are most vulnerable.
• Using pheromone traps or biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis to manage outbreaks sustainably.
