The genus Steatoda belongs to the family Theridiidae, commonly known as cobweb spiders. In an agronomic context, it is crucial to clarify that these spiders are not plant pests. They do not feed on plant tissues, vascular fluids, or reproductive structures of crops. Instead, they act as predators that help regulate insect populations within the agricultural ecosystem.
The life cycle of Steatoda involves egg production, nymphal stages, and adult maturity. Females construct sticky, irregular webs, typically in sheltered or protected areas. In agricultural settings such as greenhouses or storage facilities, they tend to reside in structural crevices, corners, or between equipment, where they catch small insects that may inhabit the area.
