Steirastoma
Steirastoma
Description
Steirastoma is a genus of longhorn beetles (family Cerambycidae) known for being significant agricultural pests in tropical regions, particularly in the Americas. The most notable species, Steirastoma breve, is widely recognized for the damage it inflicts on cocoa trees, coffee plantations, and various other woody ornamental and fruit-bearing species.
Taxonomically, the genus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Cerambycidae, and subfamily Lamiinae. These beetles are characterized by their robust morphology and long antennae, which are typical of the group. Their biological adaptations allow them to thrive as wood-boring insects, making them difficult to control once they have colonized a host plant.
The damage is caused both by adult beetles and their larvae. Adults feed on the bark of young shoots, leaves, and fruits, which can cause significant stress to the plant and promote the entry of secondary pathogens. Larvae are wood-borers that create intricate galleries under the bark and within the heartwood, severely damaging the vascular system and often leading to branch dieback or tree death.
The life cycle begins when an adult female deposits eggs into small incisions or cracks in the bark of a suitable host tree. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin boring into the wood. The larval stage is the most destructive phase and can last for several months depending on environmental conditions. Pupation occurs within the wood, followed by the emergence of the adult beetle through an exit hole.
Control strategies are essential for protecting plantations. Key practices include:
- Regular orchard sanitation by removing and burning infested branches.
- Monitoring adult population levels using light or pheromone traps.
- Application of systemic insecticides to the trunks during the adult flight period.
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to improve resistance.
