Steirastoma breve
Steirastoma breve
Description
Steirastoma breve is a significant beetle species belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This insect is a major agricultural pest native to the tropical regions of the Americas, where it is notoriously recognized for its destructive impact on cacao plantations, causing severe economic losses for farmers.
The primary host plant for this beetle is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). While cacao remains its most economically important target, the pest can also infest other related plant species, making it a persistent challenge for biodiversity and agricultural health in regions where these specific host plants are cultivated in close proximity.
The biological cycle of Steirastoma breve is characterized by wood-boring behavior. Female beetles deposit eggs into small incisions made in the bark of twigs or young branches. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the plant tissue, creating tunnels beneath the bark and deep within the wood, where they remain to feed and undergo their larval development stages.
The damage caused by the larvae is particularly lethal to branches. By tunneling through the internal structure of the wood, the larvae disrupt the tree's vascular system, preventing the transport of nutrients and water. This leads to terminal dieback, yellowing leaves, and in severe infestation cases, the complete death of the affected cacao tree.
Control and mitigation strategies are essential for sustainable cacao production and should include:
- Regular field scouting to detect fresh oviposition marks on the bark.
- Prompt physical removal and destruction of infested branches to curb larval population growth.
- Application of systemic insecticides at optimal times to target adults before they lay eggs.
- Maintenance of tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and shade management practices to help trees withstand minor pest pressure.
