Stenodontes

Stenodontes is a genus of large beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles). These insects are recognized for their robust mandibles and significant size, which allow them to bore into tough woody tissues throughout their larval development stage.

This pest affects various woody plants, often targeting stressed or decaying trees. In agricultural settings, it can be particularly devastating to orchard trees and nursery stock. Once established in a host tree, the colony can persist for years, gradually degrading the internal structure of the timber.

The biology of Stenodontes involves a prolonged life cycle, where larvae spend most of their existence deep within the host plant. Female beetles deposit eggs in bark crevices or wounds, and the emerging larvae bore deep into the sapwood and heartwood to feed, making them highly resistant to external treatment.

The damage caused by these beetles is often identified by entry and exit holes, as well as the accumulation of frass (wood dust) at the base of the tree. As larvae excavate internal galleries, they disrupt the vascular system of the tree, leading to crown dieback, reduced vigor, and eventually, the structural collapse of the infested tree.

Effective management strategies focus on prevention and sanitation:

• Prompt removal and destruction of heavily infested trees to prevent spreading.
• Sanitary pruning of dead branches to reduce potential egg-laying sites.
• Application of specialized insecticides directed at the trunk during peak beetle flight periods.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to discourage infestation.
