Stenodontes spinibarbis is a large wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. Within the subfamily Prioninae, this species is noted for its significant size and robust mandibles, which are adapted for cutting into dense woody tissues. It is primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions, where it impacts forest health and horticultural crops.

This pest targets a variety of plant species, particularly focusing on trees that are stressed, decaying, or mechanically damaged. Host plants include various broadleaf species and citrus trees, which are often subject to infestation in commercial orchards. The beetle is attracted to the volatiles released by weakened trees, making them the primary targets for oviposition.

The life cycle of this beetle follows the typical pattern of wood-boring insects: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive, as the larvae burrow deeply into the xylem. They create extensive galleries that disrupt the water and nutrient transport systems of the tree. The developmental period can span several months, during which the larvae grow significantly by consuming the heartwood.

Signs of infestation include the presence of large emergence holes and piles of frass, known as wood dust, accumulating at the base of the tree or in bark crevices. The damage is cumulative; as galleries expand, the tree loses its structural integrity. Severe infestations can cause leaf yellowing, branch dieback, and, in advanced stages, the death of the entire tree.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural practices involve the removal and destruction of infested wood to reduce the local population of the beetle. Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrition helps increase resistance against attacks. In cases of significant economic impact, systemic insecticides can be applied, or pheromone-based monitoring systems can be used to track adult activity and time insecticide applications effectively.
