Jerusalem cricket

The Jerusalem cricket (Stenopelmatus fasciatus) belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Stenopelmatidae. Despite its name, this insect is neither a true cricket nor from Jerusalem. It is a large, wingless insect characterized by a heavy head and powerful mandibles, which are perfectly adapted for chewing through fibrous plant tissues and subterranean roots.

These pests are nocturnal and predominantly fossorial, living beneath the soil surface in self-excavated tunnels. They feed on various organic materials, including the roots, tubers, and rhizomes of agricultural crops. They show a strong preference for loose, sandy soils, which allow them to maneuver easily while hunting for plant roots to consume.

The life cycle of the Jerusalem cricket is relatively long, often taking several years for the insect to reach maturity. They are highly resilient to arid conditions, which helps them thrive in various soil types. Females deposit eggs into small underground chambers, where the nymphs hatch and gradually undergo a series of molts until they attain their full adult size.

The damage caused by Jerusalem crickets is primarily mechanical, as they feed on roots, causing plants to suddenly wilt and die. They are particularly destructive to young vegetable crops like potatoes, carrots, and onions. In addition to direct root consumption, their feeding activity creates entry points for various soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary rot and systemic plant failure.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Regular tilling and deep plowing of soil to disturb tunnels and expose egg clusters.
• Using underground bait traps to reduce the local adult population.
• Maintaining proper soil moisture levels, which can discourage the insects from staying in specific areas.
• Application of soil-targeted insecticides or biological controls when population densities reach economic injury levels.
