Jerusalem cricket

The Jerusalem cricket (Stenopelmatus longispina) is a member of the Stenopelmatidae family within the order Orthoptera. Despite their name, they are not true crickets; they are flightless, ground-dwelling insects that possess powerful mandibles adapted for digging into the soil and feeding on organic matter found beneath the surface.

These insects are primarily root feeders, posing a significant risk to various agricultural crops. They frequently attack the subterranean parts of potatoes, onions, carrots, and young seedlings in nurseries. By burrowing through the soil, they encounter roots and tubers, causing severe damage that directly impacts the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients.

The biology of Stenopelmatus longispina involves a gradual metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in underground burrows. The nymphs resemble miniature versions of the adults and remain in the soil, actively consuming roots throughout their development. Their nocturnal lifestyle allows them to remain undisturbed while they feed on the root zones of agricultural plants.

The damage caused is characterized by irregular, deep cavities carved into roots and tubers. This physical destruction often serves as an entry point for various soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary infections and rapid rot. Severely infested crops typically exhibit stunted growth, wilting, and reduced overall yields, making this pest a serious concern for farmers.
