Despite their common name, they are not true crickets, nor do they originate from Jerusalem. These insects are flightless, large, and possess oversized heads with strong mandibles, which they use for digging and feeding on underground plant materials.

The biology of Stenopelmatus fuscus centers around their subterranean lifestyle. They prefer moist, loose soil where they can excavate extensive burrow systems. Their life cycle is prolonged, with nymphs undergoing multiple molts over several years before reaching maturity, making them persistent residents in environments that provide consistent soil moisture.
