These insects possess a characteristic elongated body and long antennae common to their family. Affected crops: This pest is most dangerous to various species of fruit and ornamental trees. In agricultural settings, Stenopterus is often found on plants within the Rosaceae family. The larvae develop inside the wood, feeding on the phloem and sapwood, which weakens the plant, reduces its yield, and can lead to the death of vulnerable or young saplings.

Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle includes a complete transformation: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are active during the summer when mating occurs and eggs are laid in bark crevices. Larvae live a concealed life, boring tunnels under the bark where they overwinter and pupate in the spring or early summer. The total development cycle may take from one to several years depending on the local climate.

Nature of damage: The primary damage is caused by the larval stage. Winding tunnels are formed under the bark of infested trees, which disrupt the normal transport of water and nutrients.
