Stenopterus rufus

Stenopterus rufus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This insect is widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia. It is characterized by its slender body shape, which often mimics the appearance of wasps, providing a natural defense mechanism against predators during the adult stage.

The pest primarily affects deciduous trees and various shrub species. While adult beetles are often seen feeding on pollen and nectar from flowers, the larvae are the destructive stage of the life cycle. They specialize in boring into the wood of weakened, dying, or damaged branches, often targeting trees that are already suffering from environmental stress or poor maintenance.

The biology and development of Stenopterus rufus follow a standard holometabolous cycle. After mating, females deposit eggs into the crevices of the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the wood, where they spend most of their development feeding on plant tissues. This hidden lifestyle protects them from many natural predators and environmental fluctuations during their growth phase.

The damage caused by this insect involves the creation of galleries within the xylem and phloem, which disrupts the tree's vascular system. As a result, the flow of nutrients and water is impeded, leading to symptoms like leaf wilting, branch dieback, and increased vulnerability to secondary diseases. In significant infestations, the structural integrity of the affected branches is severely compromised.

• Perform regular sanitary pruning to remove infested branches.
• Burn or chip removed wood to eliminate larvae and prevent further spread.
• Monitor adult activity during late spring and summer.

Effective management relies heavily on prevention. Since larvae are protected inside the wood, systemic or contact insecticides have limited success against them. Therefore, keeping the orchard or garden clean and removing dead wood promptly is the most sustainable approach to preventing damage from this longhorn beetle.
