Sternidius

Systematic position. Sternidius is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. These insects are known for their association with woody plants, often colonizing branches or stems that are stressed, injured, or decaying.

Host plants and damage. The genus primarily targets various deciduous trees and shrubs, including ornamental and fruit-bearing species. The larvae exhibit a cryptic lifestyle, boring galleries into the cambium and xylem. This activity disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, which often leads to branch dieback and general decline of the plant.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when a female beetle deposits eggs into bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel under the bark and feed on the inner tissues. They complete their larval development within the wood, often creating a pupal chamber. Mature adults eventually emerge, leaving characteristic exit holes in the surface of the bark.

Economic impact. The infestation by Sternidius can be highly detrimental to tree vitality. By disrupting the vascular system, the larvae cause significant structural damage to the stems and branches. Furthermore, the tunnels created by the insects serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungal rots and canker-causing bacteria, further compromising the plant's health.

Control measures. Effective management focuses on cultural practices to minimize infestation risks. Key strategies include maintaining high tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to prevent susceptibility. Regular inspection and the pruning of dead or infested wood are critical for suppressing population levels. In cases of severe infestation, targeted applications of systemic insecticides during the adult flight period may be necessary.
