They play a specific ecological role by colonizing wood, but when their populations increase in managed landscapes or orchards, they can become significant pests to various tree species.

The beetle primarily targets deciduous trees and woody shrubs. Larvae of Sternidius punctatus reside underneath the bark and within the sapwood, feeding on the vascular tissues. Over time, the galleries built by the larvae cause the wilting of branches, reduced leaf production, and in severe cases, the gradual dieback of the tree. Affected areas often show signs of exit holes and accumulation of frass on the bark surface.
